Instructions for how to complete your initial assessments are available here.
Within your enrolment form, you’ll need to complete an Initial Assessment in English and maths. It’s important for you to complete the Initial Assessments before you have your enrolment meeting with your coach as they will help your coach to assess if you require any further support with your learning journey. (You need to complete the Initial Assessments even if you have qualifications in English and maths).
The aim is to achieve level 2. If you score below level 2 you can take the assessments again; if you score level 1 on the second attempt, you’ll be provided with support on the programme to develop the level 2 skills you need to complete the apprenticeship. Please see the English and Maths Initial Assessments guidance below.
If you score entry level 3 in your second attempt at the initial assessments, your coach will advise you on the next steps.
If you have a formal special educational need or learning difficulty, do let your coach know so that our Learning Support Team can offer you support.
If you have any questions about the Initial Assessments, please contact your coach. Remember, our coaches are always on hand to support, so please do let them know if you need help.
Functional Skills in English and maths are qualifications that evidence your numeracy, reading, writing and speaking, listening and communicating skills. Functional Skills level 2 is widely accepted as an equivalent qualification to GCSE grade 4/ C.
Learners will be asked on their enrolment form if they have achieved GCSEs (grades A* - C/ 4 - 9), A-levels or equivalent, or higher qualifications in English and / or maths. If they haven’t achieved these qualifications, the coach will discuss the option to take Functional Skills training in English and/or maths with the learner and their line manager at enrolment.
If you choose to complete the functional skills qualifications in either English or maths, you will need to sit a final exam in the subject. The date of this exam will be arranged when you attend your functional skills welcome meeting.
Note: Where the learner and line manager decide that the learner will complete Functional Skills in English and/or Maths, it must be completed during the learner’s normal working hours.
Learners who already hold GCSEs (grades A* - C/ 4 - 9), A-levels or equivalent, or higher qualifications in English and / or maths will not be funded for Functional Skills, as the government doesn’t provide funding for qualifications that have already been achieved.
